Reflections of an Idiot on the Internet

Writer's picture: junkyardhoundsjunkyardhounds

Who would have thought that a society focused on profit would generate "infotainment" and all kinds of superfluous and disposable content that appeal only to quick consumption and primal emotions and which, in turn, by discouraging reflection and attention would have a detrimental impact on our ability to process and analyze information.

Who would have thought that the constant consumption of "memetic" and viral would be exploited for the purposes of propaganda, polarization and fearmongering or simply for profit.

Who would have thought that these factors give rise to a people constantly bombarded by negative and divisive messages. To a people incapable of trusting others and susceptible to hatred, resentment and extremism.

Who would have thought that "deculture" Immediate gratification would contribute to the increase in mental illness and social and economic division.

Who would have thought that the internet, in the hands of an incapable people, would be a tool for social implosion.

Who knew?! A lot of people said it. But we were busy watching videos of cats, idiots on the internet or trying to find out what brand of paper Brad Pitt wipes his ass with.
